Embedded Systems Engineer

Job Description
The Embedded Firmware Engineer is responsible for the design, development, testing and documentation of new Software/Firmware/Hardware systems for SoundTraxx products. The Embedded Systems Engineer also supports, maintains and improves existing designs. In addition to product development with an emphasis on design-for-manufacturability, the Embedded Systems Engineer provides support to the production floor to meet production schedules. Proper design and file structure documentation is required. Documentation also includes providing time, cost and resource estimates, issuing or responding to Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), updating Source Control Documents (SCDs), updating processes, and maintaining other Engineering documentation.

This position requires effective teamwork, clear communication, initiative, intelligent judgment, and dedication to the quality of the product produced. Team morale is very important.

Key Tasks/Actions – Embedded Systems Engineer I

  • Maintain a clean and safe work area adhering to 5s principles
  • Design and implement software (code, test & debug)
  • Participate in code reviews
  • Adhere to revision controls
  • Support firmware QA and optimize I/O performance
  • Create hardware concept designs including capturing initial customer/marketing requirements, providing theory of operation, identifying input and output requirements, etc.
  • Present concept reviews when required
  • Design, build, test, and document prototypes with a focus on design-for-manufacturability
  • Create test protocols based on product specification
  • Maintain Engineering documentation including SCDs, engineering specifications, and test reports
  • Present product specifications and test data at design reviews
  • Create end-of-line test requirements specific to hardware/firmware/software
  • Perform design validation testing according to test plan/protocols including destructive testing
  • Participate in external testing of EMC and ESD when required
  • Update and validate scripts to satisfy custom OEM orders
  • Create customer samples
  • Participate in manufacturing pilot runs
  • Approve 1st Articles
  • Assist in planning production schedules as it relates to design schedule and customer samples
  • Interface with Audio and Design Engineers
  • Provide support to the Production Team Leader
  • Provide support to the Electrical Technician
  • Provide post production support

Education or Prior Experience – Embedded Systems Engineer I 

  • Requires a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Requires evidence of 2-3 years of embedded systems experience

Key Tasks/Actions – Embedded Systems Engineer II

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform all tasks listed in Embedded Systems Engineer I
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to others
  • Analyze designs for optimal design-for-manufacturability, production yield, and quality
  • Oversee external testing of EMC and ESD when required
  • Create and maintain end-of-line test procedure documentation
  • Create and maintain Engineering revision controls
  • Support the Manufacturing Engineer with technical recommendations and direction when needed
  • Design and implement software architecture for embedded devices and systems (design, develop, code, test, debug, analyze, enhance efficiency & stability, etc.)

Education or Prior Experience – Embedded Systems Engineer II

  • Requires a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Must possess all skills defined under the job description for Embedded Systems Engineer I
  • 3-5 years of Embedded Systems Engineering experience

Key Tasks/Actions – Embedded Systems Engineer III

  • All tasks/actions listed in Embedded Systems Engineer II
  • Oversee product turnover from Engineering to Production
  • Work closely with Manufacturing Engineer to ensure the most efficient designs with regard to manufacturing floor processes, calibration and testing
  • Continually improve design, development, testing and documentation processes
  • Establish protocols and schedules for external testing of EMC and ESD
  • Track tools/supplies/materials associated with the position, submit requisitions to the Operations Manager
  • Evaluate service repair data and create recommendations for product, equipment or process improvements
  • Lead and direct the work of others

Education or Prior Experience – Embedded Systems Engineer III

  • Requires a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Must possess all skills defined under the job description for Embedded Systems Engineer II
  • 5-7 years of Embedded Systems Engineering experience

Requirements (all Levels)

  • Hands-on individual who possesses a high level of drive, energy, and integrity
  • Attention to detail with good analytical and problem solving skills to manage multiple processes at once
  • Solid programming experience in C or C++
  • Strong documentation, oral, and written communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Experience in hands-on development and troubleshooting on embedded targets
  • Familiarity with Systems configuration management, defect tracking, and peer review tools
  • Basic knowledge in electronics and digital circuitry with the ability to read schematics and data sheets
  • Experience with lead-free soldering including hot air for surface mount components
  • Working knowledge of Bill of Materials and ECO processes
  • Good time management, scheduling and prioritization skills
  • Ability to make effective decisions in an expedient manner while maintaining extremely high quality.
  • Prior experience in analog circuit design and schematic capture is a plus
  • Prior experience in digital hardware design is a plus
  • Prior experience in circuit board design and layout is a plus
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing facility is a plus
  • Prior experience with single-chip microcontrollers is a plus.
  • Experience with digital signal algorithm development is a plus

Software and Equipment Experience

  • Altium, Labview, IDE (code editor, compiler, debugger)
  • Spectrum Analyzer, Oscilloscope, Variable Loads, Data Acquisition Tools, Thermal Chambers

Special Conditions

  • Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines
  • Sitting for extended periods of time may be required
  • Position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching
